You can think of the average rate of change of a function as the average change in the value of the function, based on the the change in x. This is the formula for average rate of change:

\mbox{Average Rate of Change}=\frac{\mbox{change in }f(x)}{\mbox{change in }x}=\frac{f(b)-f(a)}{b-a}
